PONDA: It was an emotional moment for the Vanarmare tribe as streetlights were finally installed at Nirankal.
An emotional Vanarmare leader Gopal Powar expressed happiness over the installation of street lights near their settlement. Powar said he was not expecting this change in their life. With this development, the tribe leader thanked the media and social workers for highlighting their plight and for bringing the same before the public. After being provided with ration and Aadhaar cards, water supply, rice and other essential commodities by Government and the public, the Vanarmare tribe on Wednesday got streetlights at Nirankal where around 17 huts are located. It may be recalled that the tribe members were using traditional kerosene lamps in their huts for several decades. Last year, they were provided with solar panel lamps by South Goa Member of Parliament Adv Narendra Sawaikar.
Following the Human Rights Commission’s directive, the government provided them relief by installing five electricity poles at Nirankal.
Powar informed that the government officials told them that around 40 members of the tribe had applied for an EPIC.
The same has been approved and would be handed to them soon.
