Government Hands over Subsidies to 6,000 Drivers even as Hundreds of them Protest Outside Alleging Favoritism.
The Delhi Government would Promote the Use of Electric Vehicles as they were better for the Environment, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said at an Event to Distribute Subsidies to E-Rickshaw Drivers on Saturday.A Total of 6,000 E-Rickshaw Drivers were Given Subsidies of ₹15,000 or ₹30,000, with the Chief Minister Handing over the Amount to some of the Beneficiaries as a Symbolic Gesture. The Subsidies will be Transferred to the Bank Accounts of the Drivers.
Speaking at the Event held at the Indira Gandhi Stadium, Mr. Kejriwal said Pollution was Delhi’s Biggest Problem Today & there was a Need to Reduce the Number of Diesel & Petrol Vehicles.“E-Rickshaws Don’t Cause Pollution. Our Goal is that as Many Vehicles as Possible should be Electricity or Battery-Run, so that the Pollution Caused by Diesel & Petrol Vehicles is Reduced,” he said, Adding that Electric Vehicles also Gave Employment to many.
Mr. Kejriwal said that those who had not been Given the Subsidy could Apply for the same with the Transport Department or their local MLA’s Office by July 22. They will be Given the Amount by the End of the Month.
The Subsidy, which is Funded via the Air Ambience Fund Collected by the Delhi Pollution Control Committee, is meant to Promote Clean Energy & Transport. Every Year, Electric Vehicle Buyers can Apply for the Subsidy.

Meanwhile, many E-Rickshaw Drivers who could not make it inside the Event Complained of Delayed Disbursements & Broken Promises.
Nitin Kumar Bansal, who Bought his E-Rickshaw in January 2016, said he had Submitted the Documents Needed for the Subsidy Twice.
“But, I have Still Not Heard from anyone. Only those with Connections or those who know MLA’s were Given the Subsidy,” he said.
A Resident of Gokulpuri, Sanjay, said E-Rickshaw Drivers had been Called for the Event, but most were not Allowed in or Given the Subsidy. “They have Made Fools Of Us. The Officials Tell us that only those who are Recommended by MLA’s will get the Subsidy. Those who have Applied after us have been Given the Subsidy, but our Number has Not Come,” he said.
